Nuclear Power and Energy Agency Site Selection Team travelled to the Kingdom of Jordan for a one week Scientific Visit on site characterization for Nuclear Power Plants, from 7th to 11th November 2021. The Scientific Visit involved Technical presentations by the Jordan Atomic Energy Commission (JAEC) with panel discussions, and field visits to the Jordan Research &Training Reactor near the town of Irbid, and the Jordanian Preferred Nuclear Power Plant site meteorological Station at Amra in Central Jordan. The Team drew crucial lessons which shall be applied to Kenya’s Site Verification and Characterization project including: Applicable IAEA Safety Standards; Applicable Regulations, Codes and Standards on Site Licensing; Project Contracting and Supervision; Project Scope and works; Quality Assurance and Control; Document management; Regulatory Interface; Knowledge management, and interface with Nuclear Power Plant Vendors.
Kenya signed a Technical Cooperation Project with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for Capacity Building of the National Site Selection Team on site characterization for Nuclear Power Plants.
NuPEA adopted IAEA Safety Standards regarding site selection for Kenya’s Nuclear Power Plant, has undertaken site surveys, site selection and has identified a Preferred and an alternate Site for Kenya’s Nuclear Power Plant. NuPEA has also initiated preparations for the next stage of Site Verification and Characterization.
