Amid the uncertainty and disruption in the 2020 school academic calendar due to the Coronavirus Disease (COVID 19) pandemic, Kenyan learners have a reason to smile and uplift their spirits. The Nuclear Power and Energy Agency (NuPEA), has launched a National Essay competition targeting learners in both primary and high schools.

The Essay contest runs from 12th May to 22nd June 2020. It is geared at stimulating interest in nuclear technology amongst students. There is a range of enticing prizes, which will be awarded to the students who will excel during the essay competition, ranging from gift vouchers, certificates and trophies.

Primary school learners (Class six to eight) will write on: “What comes to your mind when you hear about nuclear electricity.’’ Learners in the high school category (Form One to Form Four) will pen their essays based on the topic: “Describe how nuclear electricity generation would contribute to economic development in Kenya.”

Students in both public and private schools in Kenya are eligible to participate in the essay competition, the inaugural one by NuPEA.

NuPEA has a robust stakeholder education and awareness program targeting schools and academic institutions, which includes sensitizing learners on nuclear energy, the rationale for its inclusion in Kenya’s energy generation mix as well as potential careers in the nuclear field. NuPEA is also a regular sponsor of the annual Kenya Science and Engineering Fair in partnership with the Ministry of Education.
